Hair stylists have always looked to the past for inspiration when it comes to creating new looks. This year is no exception and the catwalks, red carpets and glossy magazines are full of blasts from the past.
Dita Von Teese:
The 1940s are still featuring strongly as an inspiring era with many people looking to stars such as Dita Von Teese for a glamorous and realistically vintage look.
Dita’s hairstyles aren’t perhaps the easiest to replicate but with the right equipment and some patience it’s a look that most people can master.
Dita’s look is broadly admired but has taken some time to filter down to the high street mainly owing to its high maintenance. Other vintage style icons whose looks are due to make a comeback include Madonna.
Madonna:
Madonna was harking back a few generations way back in the 1980s and when we take a look at her styling in Material Girl, it’s easy to see why!
This glamorous look is high maintenance but full of impact and there will be a new version of this look for 2013…less structured but still high gloss and high glam.
Other looks which appear to be returning are from very different eras originally, most notably the 1980s.
Crimped hair in the style of Kate Bush has made a definite return and has been seen on the catwalks regularly. The frizzy mane so beloved of girls in the 80s is easy to achieve and fun to wear, especially when worn loose!
There’s a freedom in terms of which era you look to for inspiration at the moment and whether you go 50s, 80s or somewhere in between there are a host of amazing style choices to suit all-comers.
Best hairstyles of the 1980s for 2013
The 1980s was the era of big! Shoulders were big, bags were big and hair was massive. Whether crimped, curled or backcombed it was all about the volume and sales of hairspray must have been at an all-time high!
To get the latest 1980s look you’ve got to decide which box you want to fit into…and remember that not all of the looks from the 1980s are wearable this year! Some of the most flattering and classy looks are listed below for your inspiration!
Kate Bush:
The now iconic singer was always noted for her style and most especially her hair which was always worn long.
Kate went through many different long-hair-looks but it was always big and ultimately glamorous.
To really succeed with the Kate look, you need at least shoulder length locks; remember that thick hair takes the look more successfully.
Mousse is your friend when you want to look like Kate… that and a diffuser! Blow-dry your hair in the time-served 80’s way…upside down with a scrunching motion to help achieve volume.
Plenty of hairspray will help your look stay put!
Whitney Houston:
The late, great singer Whitney Houston was much admired in the 1980s for her fun and pretty hairstyles. She went for ringlet curls, either piled high or tumbling loose. If you’re not naturally curly you can still achieve Whitney’s look with the aid of rag curling or a fine heated tong.
If you’re going for the curling tong option, be sure to apply some serum to your hair to help protect it from becoming dried out.
Rag curlers are an easy if slightly uncomfortable way of getting the look too. Inch wide strips of cotton fabric are used to roll twists of hair up and then simply tied together at the top.
This is best done on hair that has been washed and is almost dry to touch. Sleep in the rags and when you wake up remove them carefully.
Don’t be tempted to run your fingers through the ringlets…that way lies frizz! Simply pile the curls up on top of your head like Whitney and secure them with grips or a slide.
Hairstyles come and go… and then come back again! We’re always looking to the past for inspiration and the 1980s has proved to have plenty of inspiring and wearable styles which are fast becoming popular once more.
These are often high maintenance when compared to more recent relaxed hairstyles but with some effort it’s easy to get the latest vintage look!
