Tips for RV Vacations with Children

Traveling in a recreational vehicle is simply the best way to ride. If you have to drive somewhere, you can travel in complete comfort with everything you need at your fingertips. Even with all the creature comforts of home, children can still get bored while on the road in the RV. Here are a few tips to help keep them happy when they are on the road in the RV and are safely confined to their seat.

Board Games Appropriate for Traveling

The beauty of having the dining room table in your motorhome is that your kids can sit there while on the road and play a game. Most dining tables in campers have seatbelts, so they can be safely strapped in while they play a board game. Travel friendly games include Battleship, Connect 4 and other games where the pieces won’t slide around too much are all good choices.

Lessons in Geography

Work on your child’s powers of observation by playing the License Plate game. From their seated position, have them watch traffic around them for plates from different states. They can chart their findings on a map of the United States, or someone can simply write down the states as they are found.

The Alphabet Game

This game is great for memory skills and it encourages reading. As you pass billboards and road signs, read them to find words beginning with each letter of the alphabet. Make it more challenging by having the kids repeat the words that they found in order. There’s no skipping ahead, so the game can take several hours to complete as you search for one letter after another.

Have Special Road Toys

If you take regular trips in the RV, then set aside a special collection of toys that are only used when you are on the road. It might be a specific doll or a puzzle game that’s easy to use in the camper. By reserving them for trips in the RV, your children will have something extra to look forward to. They won’t get bored with the toy as quickly when they know they only have it for a limited time.

Choose Campgrounds Carefully

One of the disadvantages of traveling in an RV is that you will have to follow a slower pace. This means that the trip may take a little longer. Choosing to stay at a campground along the way will give the kids something exciting to look forward to. Take your time to research available campgrounds and choose one that has plenty of kid-friendly activities. At minimum, the campground should have a pool and a playground where your kids can stretch their legs and run off some energy.

Stopping is Still Required

Kids have a little more room to move around in the camper, and it’s certainly more comfortable than traveling in a sedan. However, they will still want to run off some energy occasionally. When you stop for gas, try to also give the kids time to get out and stretch. It can go a long way towards keeping everyone in a better mood when you get back on the road.
When you are preparing for your trip, make sure you include entertainment for the kids. Have some games planned like I-Spy or the Alphabet Game to help keep the kids and adults entertained while the miles drift by. Plan on stopping at campgrounds that are kid-friendly, and plan at least a few stops during the day just for them to stretch and run off some energy.
